Glaucoma

Glaucoma "the sneak thief of light"

Early detection means glaucoma management can prevent vision loss.

Glaucoma is a gradual subtle loss of sight which usually goes undetected until the very late stages of the disease. It is the gradual optic nerve death that starts in the peripheral vision and causes blind spots leading to tunnel vision and blindness.

It can run in families, is more common in the over 80 years (1 in 12) and is more common in myopic eyes and diabetics.

Some medications also cause glaucoma such as steroid.

Your optometrist can assess your optic nerve with the DRI test , the drainage of your eye, the eye pressure and corneal thickness .

An OCT and visual field test may also be needed.
